A
chic blend of Oysters, the sea, sailing, beach huts,
interesting shops and a salty heritage, people have
been moving to Whitstable or visiting this wonderful
town to enjoy all of these things.
Henry
Irving, Sir
Arthur Pinero and Peter
Cushing are some of the famous
theatrical types who have lived in Whitstable, and
Janet
Street Porter and Jamie
Oliver are present-day fans, whilst
Bob
Geldof can occasionally be spotted
manhandling a mollusc at the Oyster Restaurant on
the beach.

In
the town, there are narrow alleys and streets
which allow inhabitants to cross it easily –
if they are thin enough. Small weatherboarded
and stuccoed houses were lived in by fishermen
and divers, although the occupations of their
inhabitants may well be very different today.
A
wealth of pubs and restaurants exists. Try the
Old
Neptune
which is on the beach and has views out to the
waves – very snug on a soggy, windy evening.
Wheelers
cannot be missed – wonderful food, bring
your own wine, and book a long way ahead for weekends.
